Dale Weiler
Ira Hudson Yellowlegs, after Milton C. Weiler, plate no. 10 in Classic Shorebird Decoys, number 7/10, 2008
bronze
8 1/2 by 5 1/2 by 13 inches

This bronze is the first in a series of creations inspired by the artist’s father, Milton C. Weiler, in the folio Classic Shorebird Decoys, plate no. 10. Dale began this series with the Ira Hudson Yellowlegs, one of the few birds from that series that his father owned and one that he deeply coveted. The shorebird has beautiful lines and grace with simplicity of form that translated very well into bronze. To create the Hudson Yellowlegs, Dale first carved the shorebird from wood, recreating the bird as accurately as possible, imparting all the imperfections and nuances of the original carving. To sculpt the base, he used his primary sculpting medium of stone. The final step in the process was casting the piece in bronze. While the casting process was completed solely by the foundry, Dale participated in the patina work. The final step in the process was extremely important to the artist, as he wanted to impart some of the subtle paint patterns in the original as well as attaining a traditional and timeless feel to the overall patina. $2,600
